Last night, NBC aired the last episode of Community the show's fans are going to see for awhile since the network left it off of their midseason schedule without explanation.People who tend to overreact went into a tizzy, claiming that this meant Community was not going to make it to a fourth season. Other, more optimistic people are looking on the bright side of the midseason snub. There is the hope that the media attention surrounding Community's unexplained absence will lead to more buzz for the show and more people will tune in when it eventually does come back (and it will; NBC has not cut the season order of 22 episodes so there will be at least another 12 episodes airing in the spring).
College Humor seems to be straddling both camps. The comedy website posted a parody video yesterday starring the cast of Community. In the clip, the in-character actors all plea for people to save Greendale, the fictional community college setting of Community, as an allegory for fans to rally and urge NBC to save the series. I like to think of it as yet another example of how hilarious and talented the people responsible for this show are, even outside of their timeslot. Others may think of it as a war cry. Check it out below:
Personally, I'm trying to remain in the optimistic camp. NBC has a habit of putting comedies on random hiatuses (30 Rock during its first year, Parks & Rec). The network also has a habit of keeping low-rated yet critically-acclaimed comedies around (30 Rock...Parks & Rec...). The fact that Community has even made it to a third season is amazing. The one thing that makes me nervous is the fact that Community has been snubbed in the awards department. The other low-rated shows typically garner a few nominations. Hmmm...
Here's hoping NBC recognizes what a special show it has on its hands and here's hoping that we'll soon find out when we will get to see new episodes of Community.
GO HUMAN BEINGS!
