Mark Valley Can Kill You With Anything in Your Room

"This is what I think about nowadays. I could totally strangle you with this."

- Human Target star Mark Valley, wrapping the cord of his microphone around his hand, discussing his show's organic fight sequences during an interview with MTV's Rick Marshall.

A brand new episode of Human Target airs tonight at 8pm EST on Fox!

Another Free Download of a New Hole Song

This should look familiar to all Hole fans out there. Just sayin'.

Everyone's favorite MP3 blog Stereogum has posted a free download of yet another new Hole song off the soon-to-be-released (for real this time) album Nobody's Daughter.

The song is called "Samantha," which is the track this Hole version 2.0* played when this they made their debut on the UK's Friday Night with Jonathan Ross last month. It's being billed as their second single, which is interesting considering they only just released their first single "Skinny Little Bitch" a few weeks ago. Hmm... Anyway, "Samantha" may sound familiar to those of you have been following this record since the beginning as "Samantha" is one of the earlier Nobody's Daughter songs that had demos floating around back in 2006.

Now, a lot of people are complaining about how "over-produced" this studio version is compared to those earlier demos. While I understand that, what these people have to understand and accept about this album is that it is NOT going to be the gritty, almost-acoustic album that was promised to us four years ago. It is a Hole record now. The songs have evolved and the other band members, Micko Larkin (Courtney's primary collaborator) especially, have sprinkled some of their own magic fairy dust on them. In short, get over it.

Nobody's Daughter will be released April 27th. The first single "Skinny Little Bitch" is available for digital download. And don't forget to click here to download the second single "Samantha" for free now.

Special thanks goes out to Rhiannon for the heads up about the freebie!!!

*Note: It's really Hole version 10.0. You know, if you're counting.

Christina Aguilera is Not Herself Tonight

The day has finally come! Christina Aguilera just premiered her brand new single "Not Myself Tonight" from her forthcoming album Bionic. Listen to it in the player above!

I am beyond impressed. She really trained her voice to be something different just like they said in the Ladytron interview! I know people who read the lyrics first and then heard the snippet (which was a really poor representation of the song as a whole, as snippets often are) were really nervous, but I wasn't. I knew this was going to be good. I know it's not very motherhood/nature/ nurturing, which is something Christina said really permeates the record. But let's be real: she had to come out the gate swingin'. This is for the radio, peeps! And "Not Myself Tonight" is on FIYAH!!! I love it, love it, LOVE IT!!!

UPDATE 6:59pm:

Aaaaaaand I'm on my 500th listen of "Not Myself Tonight." Exaggeration, yes. Truth in the future? Most definitely. Also, I just re-read the digital release date for the track and LAME! It isn't until April 13th. I need to put this on repeat until June 8th when Bionic is finally released. Then I will put THAT on repeat.

"Tonight I'm not the same girl..." What a great way to introduce a new era in her career. WORK IT, C!

ABC Renews 'Castle' for a Third Season

It's official! ABC just picked up Castle for a 22-episode third season!

And knowledge of all things macabre. The show airs Monday nights at 10 on ABC.

Congratulations to the Castle cast and crew!!! FEED THE BIRDS!!!

A Few YouTube Fan Video Concepts

This post is dedicated to K. Fay for always being the one to watch this kind of shit with me. Thank you, K. Fay, thank you.

You’ve seen them—those videos that pop up on YouTube when you’re doing a legitimate search that just look so weird that you have to click. Often they are the product of super fans with too much time on their hands and “shippers” who have an unhealthy fixation that they can only appease with the movie-making software on their Macbooks. Their products tend to be nonsensical Lion King cartoons set to Evanescence songs and scenes from Bones edited together to make it look like Brennan and Booth are more than just friends (often also set to Evanescence songs, but occasionally the soundtrack is Taylor Swift as in the video above).

Most of you dismiss these videos as the byproduct of the internet age—the same age that brought us the likes of “Chocolate Rain” and “Dramatic Groundhog.” But I have spent countless hours (exaggeration, I promise) evaluating videos such as these and have come to understand and appreciate their value: comic relief.*

Keeping this in mind, on occasion, I have been known to come up with BRILLIANT ideas for absurd YouTube music videos for some of my favorite songs. I’d like to share a few of those ideas with you now:

1. Clips of Judge Happy Boyle from Ally McBeal season 1 set to Lady GaGa’s “Teeth”

For those of you who don’t remember or are unfamiliar with Phil Leeds’ charming character from the David E. Kelley series, Judge Happy Boyle used to size up the lawyers, defendants, plaintiffs, and witnesses who traipsed through his courtroom by making one simple demand: “Show me your teeth.”

2. Footage of Punxsutawney Phil emerging from his burrow on Groundhog Day set to Britney Spears’ “Shadow”

Because I hate long winters, I would like someone to make a video that would reassure Punxsutawney Phil that the spooky shape before him is nothing to fear. As the song says, “It’s only your shadow/Nobody else.”

3. Luke Danes from Gilmore Girls screaming about jam hands set to Linsay Lohan’s newly leaked song “Stuck”

She says, “Sticky fingers, sticky hands!” and that immediately makes me think of Luke Danes flailing his arms in Lorelai’s kitchen screaming about kids and their jam hands. This video MUST be made.

Any ideas for ridiculous YouTube videos you’d like someone to make? Let it all out in the comments section!

*Note: For the record, there was one fan-made video I came across a few years ago that was actually a poignant piece of art that someone could watch and sincerely say, “That was very well done!” afterward. It was a retrospective of the seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer set to the Matchbox Twenty song “How Far We’ve Come.” It was taken down, unfortunately, probably due to the unlicensed use of the song, but it was a really great way to celebrate the show and revisit highlights from all seven years. (And for those of you who may go and do the search, the one that comes up is NOT the same video I saw back in 2007. I promise.)

Wind AJ Up: These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

Previously On…Point Dume

Previously on…Point Dume is a new web series that combines elements of the supernatural with the wonderful cheesiness of soap operas. Each episode is actually a recap of what would have been the last episode—if a real full-length episode even existed! Do you follow? The entire web series is based on hilariously cut recaps that summarize events for us without ever having to watch anything longer than a few minutes! Gimmicky, yes. Insanely clever, you betcha! I became interested in Previously on…Point Dume because of Enver Gjokaj, who was last seen playing Victor on Fox’s Dollhouse. In addition to being one of the series collaborators, Enver stars as “Lothario landscapist” Ron and Ron’s evil doppelganger. When the first episode was posted last week, I about fainted from laughing so hard. Enver and all of his costars are absolutely amazing. The facial expressions, oh, the facial expressions! Because of Enver’s involvement, the web series has been getting lots and lots of publicity (he was the Dollhouse breakout star two season in a row, after all). He’s been describing the web series as “Twin Peaks meets Clue,” and told io9, “…to our insane anger... nobody knows either of those things. If you don't know either of those, maybe [Point Dume is] just not for you. You're missing out anyway. You've got bigger problems.” While this is an entirely accurate description of the series, you definitely don’t need to have seen either Twin Peaks or Clue (the film) to enjoy Previously on…Point Dume! The first webisode is now available. Head over to the official Point Dume website to watch the first episode and sign up to be notified via email when new episodes are available.

People I Love in Pilots

As you can see from my pilot report post from last week, this pilot season is overflowing with exciting ideas for new shows and an incredible amount of talent lined up to star in them. And the best part is that tons of my favorite people have been cast in these pilots. Seriously, the announcements just keep coming! Shane West (as I previously reported) will take part in the CW’s reimagining of La Femme Nikita, Katee Sackhoff was cast as the lead in an untitled crime drama for ABC, Mark-Paul Gosselaar signed on for an hour-long legal comedy for TBS, Summer Glau is going to play a crime-fighting blogger in NBC’s The Cape, and Alan Tudyk just snagged the role of Rockford’s only friend in NBC’s Rockford Files reboot. I’m sure there are countless others I’m forgetting and even more to come as the season progresses! I know not all of these shows will get picked up, but the fact that all of these wonderful people are even being considered for projects like this…I’ve never had anything this exciting outweigh the anxiety about upfronts before.

Batman Beyond Comics

DC Comics is making all of my dreams come true (exaggeration, but roll with me)! Beginning in June, the Batman-post-Bruce-Wayne story starring Terry McGinnis that set the foundation for the cartoon series Batman Beyond will be getting a six-issue miniseries run. This is bizarre world for Batman—going from a cartoon to a comic rather than the other way around? I really want to say schawing here, but I will let the urge subside before I continue… Anyway, I was entirely obsessed with Batman Beyond during its run on The WB from 1999-2001. Choosing between Batman and Superman is a rite of passage in America. I chose Batman early on and decided I’d have to live up to the phrase “huge fan” at all costs—not get the bat signal tattooed on my chest huge, but I had a necklace or five. But Batman had been around for decades before I was even old enough to say the words “bat” and “man” together. Terry McGinnis, however, was not. Terry McGinnis was the Batman of the future, something I could feel ownership over. Plus, the beauty of Batman is that he isn’t really a superhero—he is actually just a hero, a man who wears a cape and cowl and protects the city of Gotham. Bruce Wayne is not immortal, but who wants to sit around and ponder the death of Batman? No one! So, what better way to avoid having to kill off a beloved comic book hero than to set up a successor? It made a beautiful sort of sense. And now they’re bringing the Batman Beyond stories back! In comic book form no less! What more could a girl ask for? The answer is for Christian Bale to agree to play Batman long enough for Christopher Nolan to set up some Batman Beyond franchise in the very distant future (two or three more Bale Batman movies, please).

Captain America is Not a Douche

This was the longest casting struggle in the history of film casting, but last week Marvel Studios FINALLY announced the official casting for Captain America: Chris Evans. I cannot even begin to tell you how much relief I feel over the fact that 1. John Krasinski is not going to be Captain America and 2. that they made a right choice. I say “a right choice” because there were a few good options that were bandied about, but more that weren’t good that made me incredibly nervous. I am so, so relieved. I don’t even know what to say except THANK YOU, CHRIS EVANS!!! Thank you for being both a wonderful actor (for real—have you seen London??) and an action superstar. I know you will do great things with Captain America, and for this I will plug your next big movie (and not just because I owe you, but because I am salivating over it): EVERYONE GO SEE THE LOSERS, IN THEATERS APRIL 23RD!!!

Sue’s Corner Webisodes

Sue Sylvester is back! And she’s letting herself be heard in her weekly news segment “Sue’s Corner.” This is where she coined the amazing phrase, “That’s how Sue C’s it!” The above video is the first “Sue’s Corner” of the new year and it is about a very serious subject: sneaky gays. A new video from Sue should be coming out today, so be on the lookout—for the video, not sneaky gays.

Honorable Mentions:

- Alan Cumming was recently promoted to series regular status on CBS’s The Good Wife.

- Amy Heckerling’s VAMPS

Alicia Silverstone + Amy Heckerling again = SO awesome. But throw in the fact that this new movie is a romantic comedy-horror hybrid and the casting of Sigourney Weaver AND Krysten Ritter?! This movie cannot be made fast enough.

- Foo Fighters Get Butch

90s nostalgia coupled with the fact that I have recently ignited an interest in myself to see the Foo Fighters in concert someday AND my love and appreciate for people who never turn their backs on their roots, well, this is going to kick so much ass I might cry.

- I Will Soon Smell Like Carrie Bradshaw

And it will be so lovely (perfume puns! A new market!).

Fox Cancels '24'

Last night, the cast and crew of the brilliant, groundbreaking Fox series 24 got the official word that the show has been canceled. The currently airing eighth season will be the show's last.

Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays the lovable and quirky Chloe O'Brian, was the first to break the news to the public via the above tweet.

I have fallen victim to one of those change-of-season illnesses, so I've been fading in and out of a cold-meds-induced coma for the last 20 hours or so, which means I just found out about this news an hour ago and have been reading official statements and interviews with Kiefer Sutherland and all that stuff. So, my apologies for being late on this one.

I'm actually okay with this. Talk of this being 24's last season has been nonstop since the end of season 7 last year. The show is incredibly expensive to produce, and it is beyond taxing on all cast and crew involved. 24 is one hell of a show, and I find it amazing that it has been able to run so hot and so strong for eight long years. I applaud them for making the right decision to go out on top and head right into a related project they've been talking about for at least five years: a 24 movie.

Oh, yes, that's right. Day 8 won't be the end of Jack Bauer (see why I'm okay with it now?). Kiefer Sutherland told EW.com the reason behind the decision to cancel was that they were ready to end the show and go on to bigger screens, saying, "The writers are producing the equivalent of 12 films a year, which is unheard of, and Howard [Gordon, executive producer,] felt to do a ninth would be potentially damaging. We both felt strongly that there has been a demand and an interest in a 24 film, which would be a two-hour representation of a 24-hour day, so we felt it was time to move in that direction.”

In conclusion, this is the first time I can remember in a long time when a show getting canceled did not completely destroy my will to go on with everyday activities like eating and breathing (exaggeration, but you get it). I am happy for everyone involved that they feel this is the right time for the show to end and that they know far enough in advance to give the television series a really great series finale. I'm also relieved that the movie is in "for real" status (they have a screenwriter already: Billy Ray) and that we can be looking at a release date as early as first quarter 2011!

WTF: Things That Are WACK This Week

In this issue: I gotta be honest with you, not a lot is goin' on.

***

WTF is This?

So, as I said before, not a lot is goin' on this week, which makes this the perfect opportunity for me to ask the question: WHAT THE FUCK IS JUSTIN BEIBER?!?! I've been hearing about this kid nonstop for months now, and I've done my very best to try and ignore him. Here is what I know: he is Usher's protege, he is Canadian, and he just turned 16. And I just read somewhere that police are trying to arrest his manager or someone that works in his "camp" because of tweets that were sent during a mall appearance where the crowds got so out of control that the event had to be canceled?! I don't even know, guys!!! Everything about this Justin Beiber makes me scream WTF from his too-young-to-be-singing-this-stuff music to the nicknames his anti-fans give him (they call him everything from "fetus" to one of the Quin twins from Teagan and Sara). I just listened to maybe ten or fifteen seconds of his first single "One Time" (see above or, actually, don't). Is he supposed to be the male JoJo? I am so confused!!! JUSTIN BEIBER MAKES ME USE JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT-STYLE PUNCTUATION MARKS!!! OH, THE HORROR!!!

And THAT was the Week in WTF!

Release Date for Christina Aguilera's 'Bionic'

The latest countdown on Christina Aguilera's website just ended, and, in addition to the other half of her face, we now have an official release date for the agonizingly anticipated release of her fourth studio album:

Bionic will be released on June 8th.

The first single "Not Myself Tonight" will reportedly be released to radio this Tuesday (March 30). An exclusive preview of the song will be posted to Christina's website on Friday (March 26).

I don't think I can take anymore countdowns. 75 days until Bionic. It seems like an eternity now, friends. Let's be strong.

She & Him is Back for 'Volume Two'

As I previously mentioned in my Court Yard Hounds post earlier this week, She & Him released their sophomore album on Tuesday. The aptly titled Volume Two (which succeeds their debut album, Volume One) is an amazing, infectious collection of songs that stay true to the She & Him we know and love.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with She & Him, the band consists of two members: Zooey Deschanel, who you may know from films like 500 Days of Summer and Elf, and famed indie guitarist/singer-songwriter M. Ward. The two met back in 2006 when the director of Zooey's movie The Go-Getter introduced them with the hopes of getting them to collaborate on a song for the end credits of the film. They recorded a cover of "When I Get to the Border" and music history was made!

To be honest, I'm so relieved to finally have one of the artists I love and can actually support release an album*, I barely know what to do with myself. I have been listening to Volume Two nonstop since Tuesday. I even tried to listen to Volume One yesterday (with the intention of listening to Volume Two immediately after) and couldn't because I felt I owed it to Volume Two to listen to it 500 times in a row instead of just 499.

Seeing as how I only recently became involved with She & Him, I hadn't really given much thought to what their next album would sound like or what, if anything, I should expect or want from the band in the future (other than for them to play a show at the 9:30 Club on an evening that happens to be convenient for me). So, when I had my first exposure to Volume Two via the music video for the first single "In the Sun" (see above), I immediately felt at home. Somehow, they managed to pack all of their joy for making music and their passion for making the old new again into the three-minute clip. I said it before and I will say it again: infectious.

There is definite growth on Volume Two. The songs touch a wider range of influences this round, the California 60s pop and rock tinged songs seamlessly melting with Motown, jazz, and even disco elements. And it feels like the two band members have grown more comfortable in their working relationship since recording Volume One. I read a piece from Vanity Fair recently in which M. Ward described their recording process: "My M.O. for working with Zooey is to sit in the control room and let her do her magic." It shows.

One of the things I love most about She & Him's music is the fact that they abide by one of the most cherished principles of writing I have ever been taught: If you've said all you have to say, then you're done. There are only two songs on this album that reach the four-minute mark. Volume Two steps and you quickly fall into stride with its consistent and snappy pace, even during the slower numbers like "Me and You" and "Brand New Shoes."

I find myself struggling to pick favorites, but, if I must, I highly recommend sampling the aforementioned "Me and You," a song so full of wisdom I feel smarter after I hear it; the self-aware fool-for-love track "Over It Over Again"; and the jaunty break-up tune "Gonna Get Along Without You Now."

In conclusion, I would in no way say that Volume Two is better than Volume One or vice versa, but I will say this: She & Him has defied the sophomore slump with a giggle and a wink.

*Note: This is the problem with the internet increasing exposure for foreign artists. I can't buy their albums and am forced to simply stream from YouTube all day long.

On My Radar: Pilot Report

It’s pilot season, friends! Now is the time when all of television’s greatest creative minds race to the networks to pitch their ideas with fingers crossed that their pilots will be picked up for the upcoming season.

I don’t normally follow pilot development so closely because there is really no point in getting my hopes up about a show that doesn’t actually exist yet. But there have been so many good ideas for pilots floating around, and I’ve just got to put my two cents somewhere.

***

Definitely Watching

Here are the shows that I will 100% definitely watch if they are picked up:

Boston’s Finest (ABC)

This was known as The Untitled Richard Hatem Project for a really, REALLY long time. Battlestar Galactica alumna Katee Sackhoff stars as a female detective in the Boston Police Department who teams up with a “disgraced ex-cop” to investigate the scandal that destroyed him in order to restore his reputation. This morning (so, like just two minutes ago) I read an article that said Treat Williams AND Goran Visnjic (AAAAAHHH!!!!) are also part of the main cast, but I'm not sure who is playing the aforementioned "disgraced ex-cop." The plot is a little too similar to another VERY promising pilot over at NBC called The Cape (see below), but I’ll deal with it out of loyalty and the fact that similar on paper does not always mean similar on screen. Except for when your show is about a fake psychic detective who makes a living solving crimes for the real police.

The Cape (NBC)

David Lyons, who played Dr. Simon Brenner on ER, stars as a former cop turned caped crusader who fights crimes in disguise while simultaneously trying to prove himself innocent of whatever turns him from cop into former copy. Summer Glau has just been cast as an investigative blogger who joins forces with the Lyons’ crusader and is apparently not afraid of kicking a little ass herself. I was already interested in this project, but Summer Glau back on TV (R.I.P. TSCC)? Yes, please!

Nikita (CW)

This is the CW’s reboot of the infamous La Femme Nikita franchise that has seen many incarnations over the last twenty years. Maggie Q has been cast as the title character, an operative who is tapped to replace the current and ready-to-retire Nikita but goes rogue. Shane West will star as an operative tasked with bringing the rogue Nikita back in. I was already planning on getting involved with this franchise, so this pilot has perfect timing. I’m completely sold.

The Wyoming Project (CW)

Gilmore Girls masterminds Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino return to their network roots. This is a show about a family living and working on a Wyoming horse ranch. Oh, ASP, it’s so easy to forgive, but I will never forget. As RuPaul would say, “Don’t fuck it up.”

Tax Man (Fox)

David Krumholtz stars as the head of the IRS office in Fresno, California. His office will reportedly be staffed by “eccentrics.” Judy Greer (AKA one of the greatest comedic talents of all time) has just been cast opposite Krumholtz as a new and disruptive presence in the office who hails from Morgan Stanley where they nicknamed her Terminator. A lot of people are writing this off (no pun intended, I promise) because it’s about an IRS office and that must automatically be boring. To these people, I must pause and silently point over to NBC’s Thursday night comedy lineup which includes not one but TWO mockumentary-style shows set in office environments. I rest my case.

The Rockford Files (NBC)

I was not interested in this remake at all, but Alan Tudyk was just cast as Rockford’s friend and fellow police detective. Dermot Mulroney will be playing the role of Rockford. While I do not see the point of rebooting such a classic television series, I simply cannot stand the thought of Alan Tudyk being in something that I’m not watching.

Pleading Guilty (Fox)

This legal drama deals with “embezzlement, bookmaking, offshore banking and the politics of a high-powered law firm.” I won’t lie. I passed over this until I heard that Jason motherfucking Isaacs had been cast in a leading role. I don’t need to know anything more. I am there.

Undercovers (NBC)

The much talked about J.J. Abrams spy comedy! Two married spies come out of retirement and become active in the CIA again, working together to solve cases and reigniting their passion for each other along the way (NOW you get the punny title, don’t you?). And all us Alias fans out there know that Mr. Abrams can do spies in love right! This is actually the show I’m least excited about out of all these “definitely watching this” shows. I think my excitement over all the other ones has actually made my excitement for this show wan.

***

Maybe Watching

These are the shows that I’m interested in, but they either aren’t as interesting as some others or not enough is known about them yet for me to be fully committed:

Freshmen (ABC)

Sarah Chalke stars in this show about newbie congressional representatives living together in Washington, D.C. My interest is based solely on the setting. That’s probably a pretty sad reason to watch.

Mr. Sunshine (ABC)

Matthew Perry stars as an over-the-hill sports arena manager who realizes he needs to make some life changes. Allison Janney is also set to star. I’m not head over heels single camera close up of my face music video in love with the plot, but I am that in love with Matthew Perry’s brilliant comedy stylings.

No Ordinary Family (ABC)

One article I read about this show described it as a live action version of The Incredibles. And they are probably right. A family discovers they have superpowers. Michael Chiklis plays the patriarch.

Hellcats (CW)

A teen dramedy about competitive cheerleading. Smallville actor Tom Welling is behind this project. He will executive produce. I’ve got a gut feeling that this is going to be a secretly awesome show with amazingly brilliant dialogue and villains you love to hate—that sort of a show. Plus, Ashley Tisdale just signed on to play the captain of the Hellcats squad. This is going to be bad ass. Writing this paragraph alone has made me want to move it up to the definite section.

Nomads (CW)

A bunch of broke backpackers agree to go on missions for the CIA to earn a living. I have no idea why I am interested in this. Perhaps the crazy-sounding plot?

Beach Lane (NBC)

A celebrity author agrees to head up an ailing small town newspaper for the rich heir that hires him. I am not a Matthew Broderick fan (he’s playing the celeb author) or anything, but I think this show could go in so many directions and my interest is 80% wanting to see how it turns out (like 30 Rock, but with newspapers?!?!) and 20% enjoying the actual plot of the show.

The Odds (CBS)

Simply put: a buddy cop comedy set in Las Vegas. My only interest is seeing Donald Faison not play Turk after nine long years.

Team Spitz (CBS)

An ensemble comedy about a “bombastic” high school football coach. I don’t know how to turn away from Ron Riggle. I don’t.

Untitled Adam Goldberg Project (Fox)

Christian Slater plays an ex-military guy heading up a team of young computer geniuses who hack security systems. As the great John Cage would say, I am drawn to this.

***

The Reserves

Finally, here are some shows that sound pretty good on paper and I might entertain the idea of watching them in the event that I have gaping holes in my schedule (which is, to be real, entirely unrealistic):

Off the Map (ABC)

Medical drama about three doctors who set up a clinic in a foreign country. From Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy. I think I’m just desperate for ER: The Complete Series to be released on DVD.

Breakout Kings (Fox)

Ex-cons team up with U.S. Marshals to apprehend fugitives. It’s from the guys behind Prison Break, so I know it will be intense. There’s just not anything that makes me go, “I NEED TO WATCH THIS!” At least not yet.

Kindreds (NBC)

David E. Kelly legal drama (shocker!) starring Kathy Bates as a “curmudgeonly former patent lawyer” who mentors the young minds at her firm.

The Event (NBC)

Chronicles multiple points of view in a plot to assassinate the president (who will be played by Blair Underwood). I love multiple POV style shows, but I need more before I commit.

Untitled Amy Holden Jones Project (CW)

The show follows a group of medical students at Harvard. This is apparently what Felicity would have been like if she had followed her original plan and not let Ben ruin her life.

Who Gets the Parents (NBC)

I love Lindsay Price (she was just cast as the female lead), but this plot does not interest me whatsoever. It actually sounds depressing. Adults deal with the fallout from their parents late-in-life divorce.

Court Yard Hounds Release First Single and It's Free

I just went over to Amazon's MP3 store to purchase Volume Two, the brand new album from She & Him (which is currently on sale for $4.99, by the way!) and right there smack on the front page was something absolutely wonderful: a music video from Court Yard Hounds.

Court Yard Hounds is a new country duo made up of two of the three Dixie Chicks: sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison. The third Chick, Natalie Maines, was reportedly not ready to return to full-time work yet (and who can blame her after their whirlwind 2006-2007, eh?), but the sister chicks were itching to get back on stage. And so Court Yard Hounds was formed!

Maguire and Robison announced their new project back in January and have made fast work to get out in the world and introduce themselves. They just played SXSW to rave reviews and snagged a spot on the 2010 Lilith Fair revival. Just days later, here they are gracing all of us with the premiere of their debut single "It Didn't Make a Sound" AND giving it away for free!

I am in love with "It Didn't Make a Sound," and I can totally see where EW's Music Mix got their Sheryl Crow Globe Sessions comparison from. That is my FAVORITE Sheryl Crow album of all time, by the way, so that comparison plus this raucous yet smooth song about heartbreak has me completely sold on Court Yard Hounds. Not that I could have ever even entertained the idea of doubting these amazingly talented ladies anyway.

Court Yard Hounds will release their self-titled debut album on May 4th. But Dixie Chicks fans, rest assured this is by no means a sign of the end of Dixie Chicks' days. The Chicks actually just announced a mini tour for this summer. They will hit 8 cities along with The Eagles and Keith Urban.

To hear more from Court Yard Hounds, head over to their official website where they have four other songs available to stream (they are all brilliant, but "Ain't No Son" is too intense for words). They also have a series of videos detailing the story behind their formation and plenty of other informative goodies to satisfy all of your CYH-related curiosity.

Click here to get Court Yard Hounds' debut single "It Didn't Make a Sound" and its accompanying music video for free!

UPDATE 3:29pm:

Correction! "It Didn't Make a Sound" is apparently not the first official single from the album. It is a promotional single. According to the Court Yard Hounds e-newsletter I just received in my inbox, "The Coast," which is available to stream on the CYH website, will be the lead single from the album. The newsletter says a video for "The Coast" is coming soon. The single will be released as a digital download on March 30th.

Gather Round for Some Big News from Christina Aguilera

The countdown on Christina Aguilera's website continues. It appears we have a little under 3 and a half hours left before her big news is revealed.

Reports have been popping up at various sites saying that her first single will be released to radio on Monday March 29th. As exciting as that may be (less than one week until we get to hear the first single?! YIPPEE!!!), I hope to the PTBs that her news is a lot bigger than that. For real.

Check back later for updates on the big reveal! Feel free to speculate in the comments section.

UPDATE 12:04pm:

So, it appears that the big news was just announcing the name of the first single. It is called "Not Myself Tonight." I assume the image on the website (featured above) is the single cover. There is now another countdown for more big news that will be announced in about two days. I am disappointed that there wasn't more (a snippet perhaps?!), but I am excited that the ball is finally rolling on promoting Bionic.

THE SAGA CONTINUES!!!

And Now I Have My PHD

So, I did something amazing. I bought (read: told electronics consumer expert Pedro I wanted one and then asked him to research and buy one for me) a portable hard drive. I then loaded my entire music collection—the one I spent about a month transferring to digital format last summer—onto this portable hard drive. Now, when I sit in my fluorescent-lit cubicle at work, I can just plug in this magnificent piece of machinery and with the click of a mouse [insert mouse-click sound effect here] appease my ears with whatever tunes my heart desires.

I did this for several reasons, the biggest of which was guilt. For the last few years, I avoided the fact that I have been neglecting the majority of my music collection. There was a point when I no longer had several CD players at my disposal and I started ripping CDs the minute I bought them so that I could listen to them when I was using my computer (which, being a college student at the time, was basically always). But this practice of listening to music on the computer cut me off from the rest of my collection, especially since—and I know this is totally my bad—I didn’t make the effort to go digital until last year.

Now I’m rediscovering albums I almost wore the grooves off of back when I was in middle school. Meredith Brooks’ Blurring the Edges, Christina Aguilera’s Stripped (which I am totally rockin’ right now), Our Lady Peace’s Clumsy—I hadn’t thought about these albums in years!

The other reason I really wanted to get a portable hard drive was pretty obvious: so I can listen to songs the second I feel the urge to hear them. There was a week earlier this year when I so desperately wanted to listen to Fiona Apple’s When the Pawn… but I only had Tidal and Extraordinary Machine with me at work and I kept forgetting to transfer the album in question to my work laptop. It was torture. I just wanted to hear Fiona growl at Jeanne Garofalo, “But when I think of it, my fingers turn to fists/ I never did anything to you, man!” That’s all I wanted! And I couldn’t. I will never be faced with that sort of trauma again.

I named my portable hard drive Mozzie after Willie Garson’s character in White Collar. He’s dependable, stealthy, and gorgeous just like Moz. We are getting along swimmingly. Here’s the handsome devil now:

For tips on how to purchase a portable hard drive that is right for you and your needs, don't ask me. I would've bought this one just because it's pink.

SWTS Presents a British Invasion Post

This post is dedicated to The Pink Raven.

There is apparently a glorious soul-infused retro-inspired pop movement going on across the pond. Over the course of the last few weeks, I have been exposed to some truly refreshing sounds that are coming out of Britain. I became so overwhelmed with new artists to investigate and began spending hours and hours on end switching back and forth between Wikipedia and YouTube that I decided it was time I collect my thoughts into one post of music recommendations and share with you the glory that is this latest British invasion.

VV Brown

VV Brown is how I first got started on this wonderful British soul pop journey. A YouTube link to the music video for “Shark in the Water” appeared in my inbox one morning, courtesy of the aforementioned Pink Raven, and immediately upon clicking I became a VV fan for life. I have witnessed the power of VV overtake fans of all genres—from indie folk music to reggae to Nickelback. No lie. I think she has magical powers that make people fall in love with her music upon hearing just a few notes. VV isn’t new on the scene (she is an accomplished songwriter and has worked with many artists including PCD and the Sugarbabes), but she’s new to us! Her debut album was just released in the States last month. VV is currently touring the US as the opening act for Little Dragon and I am totally going to see her perform tonight!

Sounds Like: Almost indescribable. VV has referred to her music as “musical mashed potatoes.” There are elements of 60’s duwop, soul, retro pop, rock, folk—you name it, she’s got some of it on her album!

SWTS Recommends: “Shark in the Water” –“Game Over” – “Back in Time” – “Crazy Amazing”

Available in the US: Yes!

Paloma Faith

I saw Paloma Faith’s name in passing on the wonderful internet one day and later circled back to YouTube to see what she was all about—mostly because I was so intrigued by the name Paloma (for real). I ended up being completely swept away by her powerhouse vocals and arrangements bursting through her Lady GaGa-level outrageous visuals. I listened to her album in a constant rotation, only taking time to switch to VV Brown on occasion. I soon started hearing her songs featured in network TV shows, such as ABC’s The Deep End. I cannot get over what a presence she has, and knowing this about her, well, it only makes sense that music is not the only art form in which she excels. Paloma is also a developing actress, having made a few television appearances and snagged some roles in a some recent feature films including last year’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Sounds Like: A circus: brilliant colors, dazzling performers, adrenaline pumping, freakshows and daring stunts, sweet and salty—everything. Her record is a circus. I sound crazy saying that, but it’s so wonderfully true.

SWTS Recommends: “Stone Cold Sober” – “Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?” – “Upside Down” – “Play On”

Available in the US: Not yet.

Pixie Lott

I actually got into Pixie Lott (via YouTube, of course) because I couldn’t remember Ellie Goulding’s name. I had seen a video of a soulful blonde British artist singing in a radio station and could not for the life of me remember who it was the next morning. And somehow this led me to Pixie Lott and her completely kick ass single “Mama Do (Uh Oh Uh Oh).” I ended up dropping everything I was doing to create a YouTube playlist of her entire album and listened to it about four times through before realizing I needed to get back to real life. She’s such a fun, versatile performer. Listening to her album, Turn It Up, you never get bored. And, in today’s music market, that is quite an extraordinary feat to accomplish.

Sounds Like: Pixie’s mother nicknamed her Pixie (her real name is Victoria) because she was “a tiny, cute baby who looked like a fairy,” but her voice is anything but tiny. She has the soul and appeal of someone like Joss Stone (she’s got a nice rasp to her voice, but her music is by no means as gritty as Joss can get), and she mixes it with her ability to bounce from soul-laced pop to modernized duwop.

SWTS Recommends: “Mama Do (Uh Oh Uh Oh)” – “Band Aid” – “Jack” – “Here We Go Again” – BONUS her amazing acoustic cover of “Poker Face”

Available in the US: Almost! Interscope is currently readying Pixie’s debut record for a spring 2010 release. According to British magazine News of the World, Pixie’s first US single will be “Cry Me Out.”

Polly Scattergood

This one is all Pink Raven. We were having a little music sharing party at work, as we are sometimes wont to do, and I saw the name Polly Scattergood (which I was surprised to learn is this woman’s given name—how lucky that she didn’t have to think of a cool stage name because she was born with one!). It held no familiarity with me whatsoever, so I immediately dove in for a listen (New! Fresh! Exciting!). I will be completely honest with my assessment of her music: I did not fall head over heels in love with her tunes immediately upon hearing them. But I do really enjoy listening to her self-titled debut album. It’s not something you can get completely lost in—you have to focus on the music to follow it. It’s a different kind of listening experience, and I can appreciate that. Hence, why she is on here!

Sounds Like: Surprisingly, her music reminds me of early Tori Amos. Especially on “I Hate The Way” as she sings her verses and intermingles the “dodo dodo do do” over the pounding drums or another track like “Poem Song” that comes to a slow build like old school Amos. It’s an ethereal nervous breakdown of rock music with classical elements.

SWTS Recommends: “I Hate The Way” – “Nitrogen Pink” – “Unforgiving Arms”

Available in the US: Yes!

Ellie Goulding

So, this is who I was trying to find when I stumbled upon Pixie Lott. During one of my many internet adventures a few weeks back, I saw a random video of Ellie Goulding performing in a radio station studio and thought her voice was really unique. I have to admit, I didn't quite latch on to her music based on that video alone. I didn't have time to investigate her right then, and then (as you can see from my Pixie Lott discovery) I couldn't remember Ellie's name. And then one day at work, the Pink Raven struck again! She had Ellie's album and the name immediately triggered a flashback of the radio station performance. I've since given Ellie Goulding dozens of complete listen-throughs (I've even used Lights as a workout mix a couple times!) and I just adore her record. Ellie is at the forefront of a new trend in the British pop scene that people have dubbed "Posh Pop." And that title actually really suits her. Her lyrics deal with "romantic victories and failures," which is typical of pop songs, but they have a poetic quality to them. She's an artist and a musician, not a singer.

Sounds Like: Folk-inspired pop stuck in the web of an electronica beat. Ellie's music can move you physically and mentally.

SWTS Recommends: “Starry-Eyed” – “This Love (Will Be Your Downfall)” - “I’ll Hold My Breath” – “Salt Skin”

Available in the US: Not yet.

Well, Speak of the Bionic Devil

Christina Aguilera's website has just launched a new front page that includes the above widgety countdown thingiemajig proclaiming big news will be announced in 3 days time. I hope it has something to do with her first single or at least an official announcement about her album release. But I'll take anything at this point. I'm just so relieved things are happening, especially after voicing all of my fears and anxieties in today's WTF column. The fact that there is new promotional artwork alone makes me feel better. That might be sad or endearing, I can't quite tell at this hour. I've reached a point where I'm singing Britney Spears' "Chaotic" (remember?! the theme song for Britney & Kevin: Chaotic!) but changing every instance of the word "chaotic" to "bionic."

Bedtime.

WTF: Things That Are WACK This Week

In this issue: Ryan Adams confuses his entire fan base, Christina's album is pushed back YET AGAIN, and we revisit a WTF item from the past for an update.

***

Ryan Adams Hearts Creed

Suffering a severe internal conflict of the worst kind, Ryan Adams took to his Facebook wall Tuesday to post his feelings and confusion regarding those feelings about the new Creed album (see above). Apparently, Ryan is a fan, evidenced by his exclamation, "I LOVE this[!]" Some fans have already called their love and allegiance to Ryan into question, while others are entering music stores in disguise and creating fake iTunes accounts so song clip sampling can't be traced back to them. All I can say is at least he knows something is wrong.

Special thanks to Elle Woods for the screencap!

Christina Won't Be Bionic Until the Summer

Christina Aguilera's HIGHLY anticipated fourth studio album, Bionic, has been pushed back again. And almost no one would know about it without some serious sleuthing and the blogosphere catching the news and spreading it like wildfire. Rolling Stone posted a music preview for the spring season and discreetly moved Bionic out of the April section, which is when the album was last scheduled for release, and into the section marked "July and Beyond." In the little blurb about Bionic, there is no mention made of the release being delayed. Everyone is simply pretending like they never promised us an April release. I knew something was up because we're more than halfway through March already and no press, no news about the first single, nothing. I am distraught because I thought things were on track (Alan Cumming said they finished shooting Burlesque already!) and I really, REALLY want to hear her new stuff! We're only at two delays right now. Christina and her people, PLEASE, if you are reading this, don't pull a Courtney Love and delay this release more times than [insert name of troubled celebrity] has been in rehab!

Follow-Up to Matthew Morrison Elle Interview WTF Item

Back in January, I wrote a little WTF item about an intensely awkward, inappropriate interview that Matthew Morrison endured with Elle Magazine contributor Andrew Goldman. To recap, Goldman basically ignored all standards for decorum in interviews and proceeded to badger Morrison about his sexual orientation rather than conduct a civil, insightful interview. Morrison handled himself well and came out, for the most part, unscathed. The incident never blew up into some sort of media event that required its own nickname, so it faded quickly into a distant memory after my own rage subsided. But I came across an article from Zap2It this week about the Elle incident, which makes me 1. feel less crazy because I'm not the only one who noticed it was insane and 2. feel closure because Matthew Morrison addresses it directly. Click here to read the Zap2It piece.

And THAT was the Week in WTF!

On Radio Edits

I woke up this morning and did a quick YouTube search to find Ke$ha's performance of her new single "Blah Blah Blah" from last night's American Idol (above). "Why?" you ask. Because I do not watch American Idol, but everyone and their mother has been hyping up this performance nonstop so I had to see how it turned out.

"How did it turn out?" you ask. The answer: Not good.

And the reason: Censorship.

"Blah Blah Blah" is one of the songs that best embodies the message Ke$ha's album Animal delivers. Ke$ha describes the song as turning the way men sing and rap about women in popular music back on them, to throw the attitude back in their faces. From Ke$ha's recent interview with Digital Spy: "If you listen to any rap or pop station, the way men talk to women is just so cheeky and a little bit degrading. I'm not offended by it though - I just think it's funny. This track ["Blah blah Blah"] is meant sarcastically. It's me throwing it back."

And the song works, it really truly works! It's a great track, a good, fun party song, and she definitely succeeds in singing about men the way men typically sing about women. So why, then, would her record company decide to take what is a great pop song with a real purpose and butcher it on national television and radio?

And by "butcher," I mean editing the HELL out of the lyrics (click here to listen to the original):

"Just turn around, boy, let me hit that
Don't be a little bitch with your chit chat
Just show me where your dick's at"

turned into:

"Just turn around, boy, let me get that
Don't be a little chick with your chit chat
Just show me who you are"

And

"Boy, come on, get your rocks off
Come put a little love in my glove box
I wanna dance with no pants on"

turned into the completely nonsensical:

"Boy, come one, knock it off
You gotta lotta talk in your glove box
Wanna dance with your pants on"

Finally,

"I wanna be naked
And your wasted"

turned into:

"I wanna make out
Shut your mouth"

My argument is not about the integrity of songs and how radio-friendly editing/censorship is degrading to the art of making music. My bone to pick here is about the fact that inappropriate songs that are sure to cause controversy* are consistently chosen as singles and then butchered for radio play and live performances. What's the point?

I could handle (and by "handle" I mean roll my eyes) at turning "sin" into "this" for the radio version of Britney Spears' last single "3," which, might I add, is a song about threesomes. So, again, I must say WHAT IS THE POINT? Why must you choose songs that you know the FCC will rain down fiery hell on you for playing as-is on radio and force your own hand into creating banal radio edits? Why not just release those songs as digital singles and release radio-ready tracks to radio? Why must we be forced to listen to cheesy sound effects in the middle of our jams when you can't think of anything worthwhile to change "shit" to? Why, why, why?!?!?!

To close, this is not Ke$ha's fault, and I think she did a laudable job trying to make "Blah Blah Blah" appropriate for American Idol's audience. Hopefully, she'll have to do less work when performing her next single, which she just announced will be my one of my favorite songs from her album - "Your Love is My Drug."

UPDATE 7:49am 19 March 2010:

The other half of my anger, which I did not spell out here but wanted to come back and discuss, is about the lack of creativity with the edits (shit always turns into stuff, dick turns into junk or "D", and so on) AND the fact that they do nothing to protect sensitive ears from getting the original message anyway. If a 12-year-old hears, "Shhhhhiiiiiiiiii [RECORD SCRATCH!]" on the radio, he or she knows the word is shit. We all know. It's pointless and lame and it is basically a joke how the record industry goes through the motions of editing songs. The end!

UPDATE 9:46am 20 March 2010:

Edited to clarify my statement. I changed "inappropriate" to "songs that are sure to cause controversy" because I am not personally judging any song as inappropriate. Again, I just want to be clear.

While I'm here, I will just say that I am not advocating for artists to make music that is more appropriate for young audiences. Those audiences have musicians that cater to them (typically people who also have shows or movies produced by Disney). I don't think someone who makes records that are meant to be spun at dance clubs only legal adults can enter have to do anything with their music. Their management or whoever should just make better decisions about what songs are played for network performances and on the radio because of FCC regulations and the fact that radio edits are lame and ineffective.

Ask AJ: She Has All the Answers

I succeeded in my New Years Resolution to read the entire Harry Potter series! I haven't watched any of the movies so far. Do you think I should do them marathon style or space them out and let them sink in? – Lindsay

Congratulations on successfully meeting your glorious reading goal, Lindsay! SWTS is proud of you and would like to extend a warm welcome to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (the figurative world, not the fancy schmancy amusement park they are building). With regard to the Harry Potter film series, I suggest spacing them out and letting them sink in. This is a serious departure from my normal tendency to lean toward marathons (I LOVE MARATHONS!), and the only reason I say you should space them out is because there are now six of them. And since most of them run over two hours long, that would be one HELL of a marathon. I think the best idea might be to compromise and do a few mini marathons, maybe two or three marathons depending on your schedule. My recommendation for two marathons is to group the first four movies together and the most recent two movies together (movies 1-4 and 5-6, respectively). For three marathons, group the movies in twos. The actors and the tone of the films really darken as the franchise gets deeper into the series, which is why I suggest grouping them this way. The lighthearted, fun earlier films that are very much geared toward children should be viewed together and the more mature, artful films viewed at a later juncture.

PS—Some unsolicited advice about watching the films: Go into them understanding they are adaptations, not exact replicas of the books on film. The crew does an astounding job of capturing even the minutest details of the Harry Potter world (they are visual masterpieces), but the plots do not always remain intact. If you get hung up on inaccuracies between the books and the films, it will be impossible to enjoy them. It’s best to view the literary series and the film series as separate entities. This advice can pretty much be applied to all film adaptations of books. My rule is to respect filmmakers’ decisions to change things for the sake of bearable run times and making studios happy, and to only disagree when a change is made for the sake of being different (which is dumb considering they are not telling an original story) or when the change destroys the integrity of the story (e.g., turning Harry Potter into Harriet Potter, the talking giraffe who practices witchcraft).

A related question—do you have any book recommendations? – Lindsay

Why, yes, Lindsay, yes, I do. A nice segue out of the fantasy world of Harry Potter would be to read Melissa Anelli’s Harry, A History, which chronicles the Harry Potter fandom from start to present day (which was probably late 2007 as the book was published in the fall of 2008). It’s a really good resource for those of us Harry Potter fans who came to the table late and basically missed everything during the real peak of Harry Potter’s popularity. I do have my problems with the book though, but there are some really good tidbits to be gleaned from its pages and the exclusive interviews with author J.K. Rowling are worth it all on their own. If you’re looking to make a clean break from Harry, that opens your door to about a bagillion possibilities. I’m a big fan of Paulo Coelho and highly recommend his novel Veronika Decides to Die (which has recently been adapted to film and will be released on DVD FINALLY in April). For some more good reads, check out the complete list of this year’s National Book Critics Circle Award winners.

I am very pressed for time this spring. If you had to recommend 3 shows for me to put on my "do not miss" list, what would they be? I'm a fan of L&O and Bones, typically, but I've picked up some other shows this past year (Modern Family, Cougar Town, Mercy, and I wanted to try Parenthood). – Lux

Answering this question is going to be the biggest challenge I face this week. I will operate under the assumption that you will be catching up with all of the shows you follow at a later time. That being said, of the spring shows, I suggest sticking with a few of your favorites and not taking on anything new. Of the shows you listed, definitely stick with Law & Order. At the risk of sounding like a broken record (because I do realize I’ve been saying this nonstop since September), Law & Order is on FIYAH right now. This is my favorite cast since the Briscoe-Logan/ McCoy-Kincaid days. Not only is this show (still) amazing, but it offers two special opportunities: adding some variety to your limited TV-viewing schedule AND participating in a part of television history (longest running drama of all time?!?!). A big timesaver would probably be to cut the comedies. I adore Cougar Town with all my heart and soul, but half-hours are a lot easier to catch up with than hour-longs. I also suggest leaving Parenthood for the summer or when you reach a point where you aren’t so strapped for time. I say this for a couple reasons, mostly because there is no point in investing time in a show that you aren’t sure will return in the fall. I’d rather invest the little TV time I have in shows that have staying power and that I’ve been loyally following for a few years at least. (Note: This is in no way a reflection of the quality of the show. Two episodes in and I’m loving it to death.)

What do you think of celebs who tweet? Do you follow any celebrities? – Random Twit

Celebrities who tweet can be endearing, entertaining, dangerous or any combination of those things. Some celebrities are straight up boring and only tweet about the exotic foods they eat at 5-star restaurants in Los Angeles and who did their makeup for an event (also in Los Angeles). Some celebrities have a magical ability to embed themselves in your life, creating inside jokes between themselves and their followers. And some give big pay-offs for being a follower like tangible prizes and inside information (ticket pre-sale times, anybody?). But, for real, in general, I think it’s great the way almost every level of the entertainment industry has embraced Twitter. However, someone should’ve given them a crash course in not making asshats out of themselves or spoiling the public before letting them loose online (see Julie Benz and her Dexter season 4 finale debacle and the angered thousands she spoiled). As far as who I follow on the Twitters, I started off following every single person or band or whatever that I love, which ended up creating a lot of work for me with very little pay off. Over time, I realized that just because someone makes great movies or records doesn’t mean I have to follow their tweets. I began unfollowing celebrities and now have a nice core group left that includes Conan O’Brien, who just recently joined Twitter and provides one tweet a day of glorious magical Conanness (example), and Tom Hanks, who recently tweeted a press tour snacks diary in pictures. I try to stick with celebrities who tweet sparingly, but when they do tweet it is actually worth it. My best advice is to give people a chance. If you end up following people who tweet every five seconds about brushing their teeth and getting in the car and going to rehearsal and stopping by Trader Joe’s for peanut butter pretzels snacks and taking their dogs to the groomers, no one will blame you for unfollowing them. No one.

The Halliwell Sisters To Get the Comic Book Treatment in June

The Halliwell sisters are coming to a comic book store near you!

Newsarama reports that Zenescope Entertainment has just secured the comic book and graphic novel publishing rights to the television series, which ran for eight years on The WB from 1998-2006.

Charmed was part of the original WB lineup that included Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Felicity, and Dawson's Creek. The show followed the lives of three sisters living in San Francisco who discover they are powerful witches. Charged with the responsibility of fighting evil, they try to balance their professional and personal lives with the supernatural. The original cast included Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano, and Holly Marie Combs. Doherty left the show after three seasons and Rose McGowan stepped in at the start of the fourth year.

The Zenescope press release states that a preview issue (referred to as issue #0) will be released in June and that the first issue of the series will debut at Comic Con International in July. No details yet on how many issues are planned for the run, but Zenescope did indicate that they intend for the story to pick up where the series left off.

I'm not 100% clear on the canon-ness of these comic books. Charmed novel author Paul Ruditis is attached to write the series, and he previously had to work with series creator Constance M. Burge on his stories. However, the canon-ness of those novels is still undetermined. Burge herself is not singled out in the release as having direct involvement in the series, but I am crossing my fingers that she will be involved somehow so that these can be considered part of the canon because, well, I loathe non-canon.

I am not ashamed to admit that I am pretty excited about this. Sure, Charmed was a super cheesy show, but it was also a wonderful female-driven supernatural series that really helped to shape what would become the golden years of The WB. I have always, always felt that the season seven finale would have been a better series finale than what transpired in the eighth and final season. I am pleased to no end that "Forever Charmed" will no longer be the last memory of the Halliwell sisters that fans are left with.

ABC Has Apparently Canceled 'Scrubs'

ABC has become that girlfriend or boyfriend who is too nice to tell you to your face that it's over, so it just starts leaving super blatant hints that the end is here but never actually picks up the phone to leave a message or send a text to tell you straight up.

I say this because Scrubs appears to be over forever, as evidenced by the banner on ABC's website that bills this week's would-be season nine finale as the Scrubs SERIES finale. Take a look:

I saw this yesterday morning and was hoping that it was a mistake. So, I decided to wait and see if they would correct it after a couple news sites picked up on it, but it's still there.

I know I didn't go into this season happy. I thought season 8 was a damn good way to end the show. Plus, I didn't like the idea of the new kids taking over. But I read more from creator Bill Lawrence about how he had wanted to bill the show as a totally different series, more like a spin-off than a simple continuation, but ABC was the one who wanted to go in that direction. I really opened my mind and my heart to it, and Scrubs: Med School ended up being truly, truly good. I had even planned a whole big Scrubs-centric status report for this lovely Med School season. I was going to call it "A Check-Up with Scrubs: Med School." It was going to be glorious and clever and praise the show for successfully phasing out veteran characters and giving the show a subtle, yet needed makeover. But I just never got around to it. And now, I never will.

I can't say I'm shocked because the ratings and even critical reception for the revamped ninth season have been entiretly lackluster. ABC has a handful of strong half-hour comedies and they are already looking to position some of their Scrubs talent elsewhere. I'm just sad there wasn't an official announcement first. It's like hearing it from the boyfriend's rommate when you call to ask if you're still on for dinner tonight. Harsh.

So, now we have a choice, Scrubs fans, we can either buck up and be mature, recognize that it is over and move on. Or we can turn into the clingy, clueless girl who continues to plan a life together while she ignores all of ABC's hints that they are through.

I'll keep my ear to the ground for an official announcement, but I'm 99% sure this is the real deal. Goodbye, Med School! It was nice knowing you. I will forever call peanut butter and jelly sandwiches "peeberz and jamz" in your honor.
