WTF: Things That Are WACK This Week

In this issue: we learn that not all WTFs are bad; Joss Whedon's new horror film 'Cabin in the Woods' is pushed back a year; Miley Cyrus thinks life has shut down because she deleted her Twitter account; Maurice Sendak is a BAD.ASS; NBC outwardly displays jealousy towards Glee's success; people think they can have a seance over Twitter; people think Tinkerbell getting a "makeover" is important; and Madonna reveals which of her classic songs she feels "retarded" singing.

'Cabin in the Woods' Pushed Back

I know that typically the slew of horror movies shown in theaters around the start of the year are actually Halloween season cast-offs. But Cabin in the Woods was going to be different. Mostly because it was written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard (has written brilliant episodes for multiple hit TV series including Angel, Alias and Lost). So, when I heard the news this week that the film is now being pushed back from it's February 5, 2010 release to a 2011 release I was heartbroken and furious. That is until I found out it is being delayed so that it can be converted to 3D!!!!!!!!! I won't lie. 3D can make even the crappiest movies amazing (see 2007's Beowulf). Perhaps Michael Bay should have had Transformers 2 converted. Anyway, I can wait another year for a well-written thriller if it means when the characters get slashed to pieces *I* feel like I am getting slashes to pieces.

Miley Deletes Her Twitter and the World Stops Turning

Apparently, Miley Cyrus deleted her Twitter account recently. How do I know this, what with not being a fan or a follower of hers at all? Well, INNUMERABLE mentions of it have been made this week along with statements from Miley and her family members explaining why "to the fans." Most notably, she filmed a video (shown above) that she posted on YouTube in which she raps [pause] about why she deleted her account. Then Miley wrote a ridiculous explanatory blog post in which she cites the fact that she needs, "to have the space to grow as a person and make some mistakes" as a reason for deleting her account. She also used the phrase, "breaks my spirit" in reference to hearing about her fans that "feel neglected" since she deleted her Twitter account. To Miley and the media: this is not news. GTFO.

Sendak Puts the Smackdown on Critics

Since the release of the highly-anticipated Where the Wild Things Are film, author Maurice Sendak and director Spike Jonze have started making the media rounds. In an interview with Newsweek that will be published in the issue dated for October 19, Sendak is asked by authors Ramin Setoodeh and Andrew Romano, "What do you say to parents who think the Wild Things film may be too scary?" Sendak replies, "I would tell them to go to hell. That's a question I will not tolerate." Maybe I don't know enough about Maurice Sendak beyond the amazing children's books he writes, but that made me pause, say, "WTF?!?!?!?!" and then pause again to bask in the badassery that was that response. Good for you, Sendak Coco!!!

NBC, Slam It to the Left (Where the Haters Are)

NBC has been the official broadcast network for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for 54 years (they took over from CBS in 1955). The word "monopoly" comes to mind. Anyway, Macy's, being the reason this cultural tradition exists, thought it would be okay to reach out to various popular acts and invite them to appear at the parade. They asked the cast of Glee to come on down, but NBC made them recind their offer citing that featuring the entire cast of a rival network's show would "amount to too much promotion." That's okay because the Gleeks are still gleeful as they were just invited to perform at the World Series, which, might I add, is an event that people actually watch.

Tweance = Twitter Seance

Although this is a Halloween tie-in publicity stunt from a "fancy dress shop in London," the sad fact is that people are for real going to attempt to contact dead celebrities like Michael Jackson through a seance held over Twitter called the Tweance. WTF?! People, you have taken Twitter too far. The end.

Tinkerbell Gets a "Makeover"

This Pop Crunch post describing a "makeover" for Peter Pan's fairy sidekick Tinkerbell is the most asinine article I have read in recent history.

Madonna Disses Her Own Songs in Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone's next issue will feature an interview with Madonna about looking back on her career and what is to come for pop music. The following is a self-explanatory WTF excerpt released from Rolling Stone:

But after all these years, she admits she still can’t sniff out a Number One. “I’ve never been a good judge of what things are going to be huge or not. The songs that I think are the most retarded songs I’ve written, like ‘Cherish’ and ‘Sorry,’ a pretty big hit off my last album, end up being the biggest hits,” she tells RS. ” ‘Into the Groove’ is another song I feel retarded singing, but everybody seems to like it.”

So many things wrong with those statements.

And THAT was the Week in WTF! Enjoy your weekend getting into the groove.
