Roberto and Alex Start Work on ‘Star Trek’ Sequel

***SPOILER ALERT: General plot information regarding the 2009 Star Trek movie revealed. Trailerphobes, beware!!!***

Oh, sweet Starfleet, I can breathe again! Crack writing team Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (the geniuses behind J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek and Fringe, as well as the Transformers movies) have revealed to MTV News that the rumors that surfaced a month ago are true: they are indeed hard at work on a script for a Star Trek sequel.

The writing pair has classified their work as “preliminary,” meaning they’re trying to flesh out ideas and the full story before actually writing anyone’s lines.

J.J. Abrams has said repeatedly while on his current press tour that all of the principle actors from this first feature are under contract to return should there be a demand for another Star Trek film. After a weekend opening of $76.5 million, everyone seems to be in agreement that the demand is definitely there.

Alex Kurtzman is already talking about the future of this franchise reboot. Kurtzman told MTV News, “One of the obstacles that we found ourselves butting up against was this idea that we already knew the fate of the characters.” He and Orci dealt with that by using Captain Nero’s time-travel to alter the course of history for the characters. As Kurtzman says, “Now we’re in this new world, and we’re just gonna have to live through the unpredictable future.”

I will admit that when the credits started rolling as I sat in the theater last Sunday, I did have a mild panic attack that there wouldn’t be a Star Trek sequel and I said a silent prayer to the PCPTBs* that they better give J.J. a chance…and a big budget. I am already breathing easier as IMDB already has the “Untitled Star Trek Sequel” listed as being “announced” with an estimated opening for 2011.

Looks like this revived franchise will be living long and prospering!

Too soon? Too soon.

Oh, PS—
